Lossless and lossy compression explained
FLAC uses lossless compression. It finds repeated patterns in PCM audio and stores them efficiently, then reconstructs the original samples exactly during playback. MP3 uses lossy compression and discards selected information according to a psychoacoustic model. A decoded FLAC is bit-for-bit equivalent to its source, while a decoded MP3 is an approximation. This distinction matters most for archiving, editing and repeated conversion.
Can you hear the difference?
The answer depends on bitrate, music, playback equipment, environment and listener. High-bitrate MP3 can be difficult to distinguish from lossless audio in controlled tests, particularly on ordinary headphones or in noisy places. Differences become easier to notice with low bitrates, complex high frequencies, wide ambience and repeated encoding. Even when the audible difference is small, FLAC remains technically superior as a master because it preserves all information for future processing.
File size and storage trade-offs
FLAC commonly reduces PCM audio by about 30 to 60 percent depending on content. MP3 is much smaller: a 320 kbps file may be around one quarter the size of CD-quality FLAC, and lower bitrates save more. For a large portable library, MP3 can be practical. For a permanent collection, storage is usually cheap enough that FLAC offers better long-term value. You can always create MP3 copies from FLAC, but you cannot reconstruct FLAC quality from MP3.
Compatibility, tagging and streaming
MP3 has near-universal support, including old cars, players and embedded systems. FLAC support is now common on modern phones, computers, media servers and many audio players, but some older devices and web workflows still prefer MP3 or AAC. Both formats support metadata and artwork. Many streaming services request lossless source files but deliver compressed streams to listeners; lossless subscription tiers may stream FLAC or an equivalent codec.
Best format for editing and archiving
Choose FLAC for a music archive when you want full quality with lower storage than WAV. It is also suitable for transferring finished masters, though some editing applications work more smoothly with WAV because WAV can be accessed without decompression. For active production, WAV or 32-bit float may be more convenient. For the final archive of a finished track, FLAC is efficient and safe.
How to choose and convert
Keep FLAC when quality, future conversion or long-term preservation matters. Choose MP3 for maximum compatibility, quick downloads or limited storage. When creating MP3, start from FLAC or WAV, select a suitable high bitrate and avoid repeated encoding. Converting MP3 to FLAC only increases file size; it does not restore the missing data.
