Identify the type of noise

Steady broadband hiss appears as a constant high-frequency layer. Electrical hum is concentrated around the mains frequency and its harmonics. Rumble occupies the lowest range and may come from handling, traffic or ventilation. Fan noise combines a tonal component with broadband airflow. Room noise can include computer fans, distant traffic and reflections. Listen to a section where nobody speaks or plays; this “noise-only” region helps you understand what should be reduced.

Start with recording conditions

The cleanest noise reduction happens before recording. Move the microphone closer to the source, reduce preamp gain if possible, turn off fans, isolate vibration and avoid bare reflective rooms. A strong direct signal gives processing more useful material. Recording too quietly and amplifying later raises the noise floor. Recording too loudly risks clipping. Aim for healthy peaks with headroom and monitor through headphones before the real take.

Use filtering for rumble and hum

A high-pass filter can remove sub-bass rumble that does not belong in speech or many instruments. Set it low enough to preserve body; raising it too far makes voices thin. Electrical hum often needs narrow notch filters at the fundamental and selected harmonics. Broad EQ cuts are less precise and can damage tone. Spectrum analysis helps reveal stable lines, but always confirm by ear because musical notes may occupy the same frequencies.

Apply broadband noise reduction carefully

Noise reduction algorithms estimate the noise profile and attenuate matching components. Use a clean noise sample when available and begin with modest reduction. Heavy settings create watery, metallic or chirping artifacts, especially around consonants and reverb tails. Several gentle passes can be more natural than one extreme pass, but every pass changes the signal. Compare at equal loudness and stop when the noise no longer distracts rather than trying to create absolute silence.

Gates, expansion and manual editing

A gate mutes audio below a threshold and is useful between phrases, but it does not remove noise under speech. Fast attack or release can cut syllables and create pumping. Downward expansion is softer because it reduces quiet passages instead of closing completely. For isolated clicks, bumps or noises between words, manual cuts and short fades may sound better. Leave a natural room bed so edits do not jump between noise and digital silence.

A safe restoration workflow

Keep the original, analyze the spectrum and listen to a noise-only section. Remove low-frequency rumble first, address tonal hum, then apply light broadband reduction. Repair clicks separately and normalize only after cleanup. Check headphones and speakers, especially the beginnings and endings of words. Export a lossless intermediate and reanalyze the saved file.
